Quotations from Leonardo's Notebooks...subjects being Earth,(small paintings of mammals); Air,(illustrations of birds); Water (pictures of fish); and Fire (that left insects!) ... The overall shape suggests a polyhedron, thought to have magical properties during the Renaissance.
The image below is the original ms. It was done before I had Photoshop to assist with layout. I planned it the "old fashioned" way...by using math and geometry. Fortunately, I have always loved both those disciplines. It seems to be evenly split: those who prefer the original to the top version which has been extensively "enhanced" with Photoshop.
